The cost of the program is $95.00.  It includes the sessions listed on the program, morning coffee and nibbles, lunch (fare provided by the Oyster Cracker Cafe with a choice of sandwich - see Menu below), and one year membership to NJMEA.

Delaware Bay Museum and Folk Life Center Experience: (1 hr-AM and PM)

Step back in time to the early 1900’s and visit the thriving oyster industry of Maurice River Cove.  Our museum will engage and inspire teachers/students in the history of the Bayshore Region through hands-on, interactive activities and inquiry based exhibits.  You can reenact the jobs of the men and women of the oyster industry and learn how oysters shaped the culture, history and environment of the Delaware Bay and its people.  Stations included are oyster processing, the shucking house, and tool time.

Wetlands Walk: (1 hr-AM and PM)

Participate in our guided tour and become exposed to the beauty and importance of our wetlands.  Bivalve’s salt marsh provides a vital habitat for plants & animals, including migrating birds, spawning species and their freshly hatched young.  Wetlands also prevent flooding and storm damage, improve water quality, and minimize erosion.  Engage in hands-on identification of birds, plants, and marine life, while learning about why wetlands are so important.  Come experience the sights, the sounds, the smells, even the textures that this diverse resource has to offer.

Education Sail Aboard the Schooner AJ Meerwald: (2 hrs-AM and PM)

Step aboard and step back in time.  Using teamwork and the mechanical advantage of simple machines, haul on the manila lines to hoist the canvas sails.  Learn about the surrounding environment and how we impact it in our daily lives.  Participate in hands-on learning based experience designed to awaken you/your students to the importance of our ecosystem and the impact of our actions.  Stations included are plankton, oysters, water chemistry and trawl.

Fortescue Field Trip: (2 hrs-AM & PM)

It’s that time of year again for the return of the horseshoe crab and red knot!  Each spring, hundreds of thousands of horseshoe crabs come to the beaches along the Delaware Bay to spawn, and has long since been home to the greatest concentration of spawning horseshoe crabs in the world.  Come join us at Fortescue Beach and explore this wonderful habitat and get an up-close and personal look at the Horseshoe Crab!

Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory Field Trip: (2 hrs-AM & PM)

The Haskin Shellfish Research Laboratory (HSRL) of Rutgers University has supported science-based management of the Delaware Bay oyster resource and other fisheries since the late 1800s. Developed as an outreach initiative of the HSRL, Project PORTS (Promoting Oyster Restoration Through Schools) is a unique community-based restoration program that offers K-12 students an opportunity to experience environmental stewardship as they help restore oyster habitat. The restoration work is complemented by in-class lessons that support STEM concepts and skill building, while connecting students with the local environment. Attendees will tour the Haskin Lab and learn about Project PORTS as a model for incorporating authentic science learning experiences in the classroom. Participants will also participate in That’s Gross Anatomy, oyster dissection activity- a signature lesson of Project PORTS.
