Exploration of the estuary ecosystem at Sandy Hook
Join New Jersey Marine Education Association for an early Fall program on Saturday, October 2, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. -- 12:00 p.m. Explore the coastal estuary at Sandy Hook with partner organization and host New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium in this 3-hour workshop designed to get you outdoors and actively learning in nature while interacting with your fellow ocean science educators. Take part in investigations that will focus on learning about climate change in estuaries. The field experience will include seining for species diversity in the near-shore estuary, water quality testing (pH, salinity, & DO), marsh plant identification and zonation characterization, plankton collection and identification. All activities are time and weather dependent, and all materials and equipment will be provided.
No need to worry about childcare during the workshop -- bring along your child(ren) ages 7 and up for a morning of activities at the beach! Led by partner organization Jenkinson's Aquarium, kids will participate in their own "workshop", complete with beach scavenger hunt/bingo, beach clean-up with marine debris analysis, and beachcombing.
End the morning with a picnic at the beach. Bring your own lunch and relax before heading home.
